The Village Election is held every March.  To run for elective Village office, an individual must be 18 years old, a citizen of the United States and a resident of the Village by the day of the election.  Candidates for Village office are nominated through an Independent Nominating Petition. In villages of at least 3,000 residents but less than 5,000 residents, at least 75 registered voters must sign the nominating petition.

A candidate running for office as an independent body must choose a name and emblem to identify themselves on both the independent nominating petition and the ballot. The name must be in English and must not include the name, part of the name, or abbreviation of an existing party.  The name and emblem on the independent nominating partition must conform to the requirements of the Election law relating to party names and emblems.  A candidate’s independent nominating body name MAY NOT include the words:

  • American
  • United States
  • National
  • New York State
  • Empire State

or any abbreviations thereof.

The independent emblem MAY BE:

  • An animal
  • An anchor or any other proper symbol.

The independent emblem MAY NOT be the same as or similar to:

  • The emblem, insignia, symbol, or flag of any political or governmental body, agency, or entity.
  • Any religious emblem, insignia, symbol, or flag.
  • The portrait of any person, the representation of a coin or the currency of the United States.
  • Similar to or likely to create confusion with the name or emblem of an independent body.

An independent nominating petition must be filed with the Village Clerk not earlier than 42 days and no later than 35 days preceding the election.  The specific nominating petition due dates for this Village of Saugerties 2026 election are listed above, in the notice issued by the Village Clerk.

Petitions consisting of two or more sheets must be securely bound and numbered sequentially at the foot of each page.  Petitions consisting of ten or more pages must have a cover sheet attached.  The cover sheet must be addressed to the Village Clerk and include the number of pages and number of signatures being submitted and signed by the candidate.

Once the petitions are received, the Village Clerk must notify by mail each person nominated of their nomination.  Any candidate nominated must file a certificate of acceptance or declination in the Village Clerk’s office within three days of the last day to file independent nominating petitions.

The candidate's name will appear on the official ballot as it appears on the petition.
